Bird company Feldman Ecopark added exotic representatives

Couple of Himalayan monal pheasant and a sulphur-crested cockatoo joined the numerous and motley bird company living in the Feldman Ecopark.

“As the thermophilic representative of tropic latitudes, a cockatoo with its conspecifics is in winter quarters now. The Himalayan monal pheasant is outdoors. These are the mountain birds that are well adapted to withstand winter cold in their natural habitat. All birds are healthy and feel well on the new place”, – the Feldman Ecopark deputy director of zootechnic issues Valeriia Ivashchenko tells.

The zoological collection of the Feldman Eсopark comprises more than 15 cockatoos and 20 pheasants.

The Himalayan monals belong to the family of pheasants. These birds live at the height from 2,5 to 5 thousand meters above sea level in the mountain forests and in the Alpine meadows. The Himalayan monals eat roots, tubers and insects which they dig out of the ground using their strong legs and a strong beak. They have bright plumage and they are larger than other species of pheasants, reaching length of 70 cm, including more than 20 cm of a tail. The Himalayan monal is one of national symbols of Nepal and an official bird of the Indian state Uttarakhand.

The sulphur-crested cockatoo lives in the eucalyptus forests and savannas of Tasmania, Australia and New Guinea in flocks consisting of several tens of individuals. These are large-sized representatives of the family; their length is about half a meter. These birds find nutrition on trees – fruits, inflorescences, berries etc. Without having good ability to imitate the human speech, the bird can emit a large number of most various sounds. At the same time it is well trained that allows a sulphur-crested cockatoo to be the frequent participant of circus performances.

It should be noted that this is not the only autumn addition to the zoological collection of the Feldman Ecopark where two Bennett’s tree kangaroos and a male of red kangaroo relocated for permanent residence.
