The Regional Landscape Park is trying to cope with August heat: the new systems of hydro-cooling were installed in the enclosures, and the diet of animals was supplemented with the special ice cream for animals. According to the specialists of Feldman Ecopark, the ‘heat protection’ system has already been worked out, but it is replenished with the new ways to overcome heat every year.
“Like in the majority of zoos, we have stationary pools for animals and periodic showers from garden hoses. This year, we have purchased the irrigation units – the special hoses with numerous holes spraying water under pressure. They have already been installed in the enclosures with animals, which suffer from heat the most. Among them are bears, tigers, pumas, caracals, some other predators and the most part of primates. The latter use the shower as an additional entertainment,” Feldman Ecopark’s deputy director of zootechnics Valeriia Ivashchenko told. “In addition, the summer diet of our animals, which need additional heat regulation, includes ice cream – ice with fruits and berries for the primates, and with blood, meat or fish for the predators.”
However, there are the ones who are really satisfied with the August heat – various four-legged, feathered animals and reptiles, which usually inhabit exotic southern countries. The heat is especially pleasant for the big African spurred tortoises, which live in the renovated African enclosure. This temperature is almost ideal for these natives of semi-deserts to the south of Sahara.
