The exhibition devoted to the 130th anniversary of the birth of Barbara Karinska, the outstanding costume designer born in Kharkiv, will be opened in the AVEC Gallery on October 19. The posters depicting the costumes created by Barbara Karinska for movies will be presented there.
The organizers note that the daughter of a Kharkiv merchant, a member of the city duma A. Ya. Jmoudsky, Barbara emigrated to the West in the middle of 1920s. She lived and worked in Paris, later in London. She created costumes for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and for the other Slavonic ballet companies. In 1939, she moved to New York (the USA). She worked with many world-famous artists, like Salvador Dalí, Marc Chagall, and others. From 1940s to 1970s, she created costumes for almost all performances of the legendary choreographer George Balanchine, the founder of American ballet.
In addition to ballet, Karinska was often asked to work as a costume designer at filming with the participation of such Hollywood stars as Marlene Dietrich, Ingrid Bergman, Vivien Leigh, Gary Cooper, and others. She won her Oscar for Joan of Arc (1984) costumes.
The exhibition will be opened in the AVEC Gallery at 5 p.m., October 19. The excursion will be conducted by the research scientist of the Shulzhenko Museum of Famous Kharkivans, the author of the book “Barbara Karinska. Interpretations.” Mykola Shemet.
