A penguin appeared in Feldman Ecopark

Albert, the Humboldt penguin supplemented the bird collection of the Regional Landscape Park. It was brought from a private zoo, and now the bird accustoms itself to the new place. The visitors of Feldman Ecopark will be able to look at it soon.

“Albert is not a kid, it is 1,5 years old. It feels fine, enjoys fish and is not afraid of keepers. It has already undergone the complete veterinary examination and other necessary procedures. It currently lives in the individual premises with pool. When it adapts, the penguin will stroll with flamingos in their spacious enclosure,” Feldman Ecopark’s deputy director of zootechnics Valeriia Ivashchenko told. “It is the first penguin in our animal collection. Its historical homeland is South America, but Ukrainian climate is quite comfortable for it as well. We are sure that Albert will become a favourite of children and adults – all visitors of Ecopark.”

It should be noted that the Humboldt penguin, or Peruvian penguin is a flightless bird of Sphenisciformes order. The Humboldt penguin was mentioned for the first time by conquistador Pedro Pizarro, who had seen this bird in the Chincha river-valley. The reduction of the population of these birds was caused by the changes in the system of currents of the Pacific Ocean. The global population is 12,000 couples, 8,000 of which breeds in Chile, and 4,000 in Peru.

It should be reminded that the bird collection of Feldman Ecopark includes more than 1,000 birds of 100 species. There are a lot of rare and exotic ones among them, like the greater flamingos, which appeared here not so long ago.
