Two weeks ago in the Regional Landscape Park the family of monkeys from a species of baboon expanded its membership with one more nice kid which together with its mother stays in the special enclosure at present time.
According to Feldman Ecopark’s deputy director of zootechnics Valeriia Ivashchenko, the kid’s sex is still unknown as the mother keeps it about herself all the time, keeping off the specialists veterinarians who, however, are sure that the mother and the newborn are healthy.
“They are removed from the main group of sacred baboons and stay in a special room, as the mother must bring up her baby in quiet until it is strong enough to protect itself from harmful acts of other adult individuals. There, in some kind of small maternity hospital, a recently delivered sacred baboon female and one which is near her time are also contained” — Valeriia Ivashchenko told.
Under natural conditions hamadryads inhabit open mountain areas of East Africa and the South of Arabian Peninsula. These animals live in big groups of 100-150 individuals. Unlike many monkeys, the sacred baboons don’t climb up trees and at the same time they are skillful rock-climbers.
It should be reminded that recently in Feldman Ecopark the baboon baby was born, it already stays together with a group of relatives in the winter enclosure. The visitors will be able to see the kids belonging to the genus Papio in the spring when the weather becomes rather favorable for these thermophilic African animals.
Now the unique zoological collection of the Feldman Ecopark has extra nearly 200 apes of 30 species, 12 hamadryads and 13 baboons.
