The large family of primates of the Regional Landscape Park has a new one again – the hamadryas baboons have a baby. It should be reminded that last week, the animal collection of Feldman Ecopark increased, as a little baby-girl of this species was born. The specialists cannot say right now who was born this time – a boy or a girl, as the mother allows no one to approach a newborn.
“The intrigue will be revealed one of these days, when the emotional condition of the mother stabilizes enough to allow our veterinarians to examine the kid, as well as the mother,” Feldman Ecopark’s deputy director of zootechnics Valeriia Ivashchenko told. “Now, the mother constantly stays with the kid, feeding it with the breast milk, nurturing and cherishing it diligently in the special premises for the parturient together with the mother of the previously born hamadryas baboon.”
It should be noted that hamadryas baboons are the social animals with rather complicated relations within the group. That is why it is better to keep the new mothers separately from more dominant females.
It should also be noted that the birth of hamadryas baboon kids is already a good tradition for the Regional Landscape Park: two monkeys of this species were born here last year.
As of now, 12 hamadryas baboons live in Feldman Ecopark, while the total number of primates exceeds 200 animals, which is a record for Ukraine.
