Japanese macaques born in Feldman Ecopark

A spring baby boom continues in the Feldman Ecopark: for the first time, the family of Japanese macaques gave birth to two charming kids. Ashley and Finn (female and male) feel themselves excellently, the specialists note.

“Babies are trying to be independent already and ape parents’ behaviour: they take care of themselves, try to replace breast milk with fruits and vagetables,” the Feldman Ecopark deputy director of zootechnic issues Valeriia Ivashchenko tells.

Today, everyone is able to see little primates in the Feldman Ecopark. Even in cold weather, mothers don’t lose the opportunity to take the kids out into the open enclosure.

It should be noted that Japanese macaques are considered to be the most frost tolerant primates of the planet. This is the single species of monkeys living in Nagano Mountains on Yakushima Island, where the snow may lie up to four months in the year, and the average temperature is near -5°С. Bathing helps them to survive during winter – they may by often found in the hot springs of Yakushima.

It should be noted that the Feldman Ecopark has the biggest collection of primates in Ukraine: there are over 180 monkeys of 30 species. In general, over 2,000 animals live in the Regional Landscape Park with the area of 140.5 ha.
