Two young females of a two-humped camel (Bactrian) have filled up a Feldman Ecopark’s Tylopoda collection. They were brought from a private zoo to keep company to a male Avel with whom they will live in a new spacious enclosure.
“She-camels are two years old, Avel is three and a half. Animals will become mature soon, and we look forward to colt addition in the future. Our animal collection have three more senior Bactrians – a male and two females. For all this two-humped herd a big enclosure recently been built. It is divided into two parts that both males with their harems had their own territory. Our pets can shelter from bad weather in a special lodge located inside the enclosure. In building of camel dwelling we sought to keep a concept of animal wellbeing and other recommendations of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA)” — the Feldman Ecopark’s specialists told.
It should be noted that camels are the largest of Feldman Ecopark’s inhabitants. These sedate graminivorous giants belong to the Tylopoda group, named partly for pulvinated thickenings instead of the hoofs. The immediate family of “desert ships” of the Old World are
Aepycamelus camels of South America: llamas and their relatives (guanacos, alpacas and vicuñas). They are also presented animal collection of the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex.
It should be reminded that the animal collection of Feldman Ecopark includes more than 2,000 animals of nearly 300 species, many of them are in the IUCN Red List and are part of the World Open Foundation for Animal Rehabilitation and Reintroduction (WOFARR) programmes. Besides, it should be reminded that the funds raised by means of the charitable campaign “The Art of Mercy” are channeled towards financing of WOFARR and three more Feldman Ecopark’s projects.
