The three-year-old male of the red-crowned Crane settled in Feldman Ecopark. It will make a lovely match for a female of this species that was brought from the Riga zoo two months ago. While birds are kept separately – the new settler accustoms, gets used to our animal keepers and neighbors. In the spring, the bird together with its girlfriend will go to the common enclosure to other affined birds.
“The red-crowned crane arrived from a private zoo. The bird already underwent veterinary inspection, quarantine and other necessary procedures. A crane feels great and eats with an appetite. The diet is based on grain and vitamin mixes, a bird really loves different vegetables — Feldman Ecopark’s deputy director of zootechnics Valeriia Ivashchenko told. – It is a rare species of birds, and its preservation is of great importance therefore we strongly hope that our Red-crowned cranes will start a family and give addition”.
It should be noted that red-crowned cranes are one of the largest of the family of crane – the height is about 158 cm and weight of about 7,5 kg. Their natural habitat is completely limited to the Far East and Japan. The red-crowned crane is the second representative of the crane family in the small number category, now the species is endangered and included the IUCN Red List. It should be reminded that Feldman Ecopark’s zoological collection comprises 6 species of cranes: red-crowned (Japanese) crane, crowned crane, sarus crane white-naped crane, gray crane and demoiselle. The crane family contains 10 individuals.
