The couple the Papuan hornbills (hornbills) lodged in Feldman Ecopark. They were transferred to the Regional Landscape Park by former owners who were forced to move in and couldn’t take the birds with them. The Papuan hornbill couple lodged in the Ecopark’s aviary. According to veterinarians, the birds feel well and already accustomed on the new place.
“Similar cases are not unusual now, – the deputy director Feldman Ecopark Valery Ivashchenko tells. – The owners of exotic animals who for various reasons are forced to refuse keeping animals at home, trust their favorites to the Ecopark. They are sure that the animals will be well-groomed, healthy and happy in the custody of our skilled and attentive employees”.
Blyth’s hornbills (other names – Papuan hornbills, Hornbills) are large birds (body length reaches 65-85 cm, the male’s weight – 1190-2000g, the female’s – 1500-2000g), who draw attention with the attractive look. As well as other representatives of the Hornbill family, they differ in presence of the maxilla with several cross horn calloused eminences in the form of folds. The general plumage coloring is black, a neck and the head are light, and males have blue throat skin, females – light yellow one. Females have black head feathers, males have red – brown one. The Papuan hornbill is widespread in New Guinea, Bismarck Archipelago, Solomon and Moluccas Islands. Generally it inhabits evergreen rainforests, sometimes – the deciduous forests and mountains at the height up to 1500 meters above sea level. These birds eat various fruit; especially love a fig, insects and small invertebrates.
