Three Diana monkeys (two boys and one girl) settled in Feldman Ecopark. Earlier in the Regional Landscape Park there was only one representative of this species of primacies. Monkeys arrived to Ecopark within the program of a free exchange between zoos of Ukraine.
Newcomers already underwent quarantine and necessary procedures, received all vitamin supplements which are required for them. They settled in the open-air cage where Ecopark’s guests can see these rare monkeys (in nature they live in rather small territory in West Africa, the area of their distribution decreases because of deforestation). “It is very playful, active, friendly and inquisitive animals. They, for example, like to pick people’s pockets, – the deputy director Feldman Ecopark Valery Ivashchenko tells. – Monkeys prefer to eat various fruit and berries”.
We will remind that in Feldman Ecopark is the biggest collection of primacies in Ukraine – about 200. In total in Ecopark there are more than 2 thousand animals.
We will note that the Diana monkeys, or bearded monkeys, in nature live in the jungle of West Africa near the Atlantic coast. Length of a body of Diana ranges from 40 to 55 cm, the tail has length to 70 cm. Adult individuals weigh 4-7 kg. They live in groups with one adult male leader, his harem and cubs. The Diana monkeys eat mainly fruit and insects, also flowers, young leaves and invertebrates.
