A couple of 10-months old desert lynxes, also known as caracals, makes home in the Feldman Ecopark. The workers of the Regional landscape park named the babies Carlos and Cara. The new animals are in the warm close premises, where they are waiting for the end of winter. In spring, the caracals will move to the spacious enclosure situated in one of the main paths of the Ecopark.
“After the arrival in the Ecopark, the animals were quarantined. The vets carried out all needed analyses, the results of which indicated that the predators are not dangerous for the other animals and for the visitors of the Ecopark,” the Feldman Ecopark Director Andrii Roshchupkin noted.
According to his words, the desert lynxes have already adapted in the new place, but they are still afraid of contacting with people. The specialists expect that the mannered caracals will soon get used to the human care and will be able to go for a walk with the workers.
It should be reminded that over 2,000 animals live in the Feldman Ecopark, including 80 predators. Such species as caracals appeared in the Regional landscape park for the first time.
Reference: caracal is a carnivorous animal living in savannas, semi-deserts, deserts and foothills of Africa, Arabian Peninsula, Anatolia and Central Asia. The predators also inhabit the Middle East. The biologists note that although caracals are sometimes called the desert lynx, they are not members of the Lynx genus. There is just a resemblance in appearance. According to the morphological characters, their closest ‘relatives’ are cougar and serval.
