A newborn patas monkey appeared in the Feldman Ecopark. This is the first time during the existence of the Ecopark, when the representatives of these species bred: monkeys named Masiania and Papaia have a baby named Monkey.
“The patas monkeys are very interesting animals. They are active and become tame easily,” the deputy director of zootechnic issues Valeriia Ivashchenko told.
The baby feels good, it is close to the mother all the time and eats mother’s milk. Soon, when Monkey will grow a little, it may be given to the other zoo. However, it is possible that it will stay in the Feldman Ecopark.
It should be reminded that the collection of primates of the Feldman Ecopark is the biggest in Ukraine. There are near 180 animals of 30 species in the Regional Landscape Park. The total number of animals here exceeds 2,000.
Reference. The patas monkeys (or hussar monkeys) dwell in Africa: their natural habitat is situated to the north from the rainforests and to the south from Sahara. They live in wooded prairies and open savannahs. They are quite large monkeys: they weigh from 7 to 13 kg. They have elongated muzzle, like macaques, and their body is slim with long and thin limbs, like guenons.
They are ground-dwelling monkeys walking with the help of four legs. They can climb the trees and rocks. Moreover, they can stand on hind legs and lean on the long tail. These monkeys eat the fruits from trees and bushes, grass, seeds, lizards, small invertebrates, birds and their eggs, and honey.
The patas monkeys live long in zoos and breed quite well.
