The specialists of the Service for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home” conducted a raid in the Poultry market of Kyiv. It was devoted to monitoring of illegal trade of songbirds of Ukraine (goldfinches, etc.) caught by poachers.
According to the head of Good Home, the recent case at the Boryspil airport where found more than 1, 5000 goldfinches tried to be illegally exported to one of the southern countries where these birds are used for preparing delicacies became a reason for conducting of this raid.
“This case is the tip of the iceberg, illegal business on catching, buying and export of goldfinches and other songbirds works in Ukraine long ago. According to the calculations of animal protection activists, about 500,000 wild songbirds of Ukraine became the victims of this criminal business in the past 10 years! It is serious blow to their populations and to functioning of an ecosystem as a whole — Iryna Podvoiska emphasized. – Therefore, we decided to check one of the largest poultry markets concerning illegal bird trade in Kyiv.”
The animal protection activists have not identified the facts of trafficking in goldfinches or other wild songbirds in the market. “That’s a good sign, and we are grateful to the people trading at this market for their consciousness. However, it doesn’t mean that the problem is solved. We will continue monitoring of places of possible buying up of birds and we urge law-enforcement structures to pay close attention to activities of poachers” — Iryna Podvoiska stated.
It should be noted that Service for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home” was opened in 2010 and during this time rescued more than 28,000 animals in different regions of our country, more than 6, 000 of which are representatives of wild fauna of Ukraine.
