The Feldman Ecopark has new residents again – the new inhabitants from Equatorial Africa appeared here, five young De Brazza’s monkeys. They moved here for the permanent living within the framework of the programme of interchange between zoos directed at preservation of rare species.
“All of them are boys of about one year old. The monkeys underwent all necessary veterinary procedures, and will be settled soon in the winter enclosure together with the other representatives of their species. Now, there are 10 De Brazza’s monkeys including the new ones in the Feldman Ecopark. The animals will surely get on with each other. However, despite their young age, some of the kids have already started to demonstrate their character and ambitions of a leader. It is caused by the peculiarities of their specific behaviour. In the wild, De Brazza’s monkeys live in small family groups leaded by one male,” the Feldman Ecopark deputy director of zootechnic issues Valeriia Ivashchenko told. “In the natural environment, they eat various, mainly vegetable food. Their diet also includes protein supplements – nestlings, birds’ eggs and small reptiles. The monkeys eat vegetables, fruits, berries, cereals, meat, fish, and dairy products in the Ecopark.”
It should be noted that the De Brazza’s monkey has a very distinctive look – once you see it, you’ll never confuse it with any other species of monkeys. It is named after the Italian explorer and naturalist Pierre de Brazza, whose name was also given to the capital of Congo Brazzaville.
It should be reminded that the Feldman Ecopark has the largest collection of primates in Ukraine. There are over 200 monkeys of 30 species here.
