In Feldman Ecopark 50 Central Asian land turtles appeared. Animals arrived to the Regional Landscape Park within the program of an exchange between zoos.
As the deputy director Feldman Ecopark Valery Ivashchenko told, now in good weather it is possible to see tortoises in an open terrarium of Ecopark. These animals eat vegetables, fruit, grass and branches.
In the autumn when school classes will resume, part of tortoises, perhaps, will be transferred to school nature corners. “We will help the Kharkiv schools in the creation of nature corners. Thus we want to accustom pupils to look after animals; that will give them not only the experience of communication with wildlife, it will expand knowledge in biology, but also will make children kinder”, – Valery Ivashchenko tells. – If at schools there is no opportunity to look after animals during holidays, then we will take them to Ecopark for this time “.
We will note that the Central Asian or steppe tortoise belongs to family of land tortoises. It lives to 40-50 years. It inhabits clay and sandy deserts, in the foothills, in river-valleys and on farmlands over the whole territory of Central Asia, in Northeast Iran, Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon, in the northwest regions of India and Pakistan. The number of tortoises is high in many places, but it is constantly reducing, the species is listed in the Red Book. The Central Asian turtoise is a popular pet.
