Nearly 20 Javan lutungs – the Old World monkeys – were returned to their natural habitat within the framework of the programme of the International Charitable Foundation “Oleksandr Feldman Foundation” and the Regional Landscape Park Feldman Ecopark aimed at the rescue and reintroduction of rare and endangered species. The monkeys of this vulnerable species, which are at risk of extinction, were rescued from poachers during the animal protection expedition to the countries of Southeast Asia.
“Poaching, the catch of exotic, rare animals for profit is a huge problem, and animal protection activists and workers of reserves and zoos all over the world are trying to combat it. The preservation of rare species is a work, the success of which depends mainly on the combined efforts of specialists from different countries and continents. Feldman Ecopark has already taken part many times in international programmes aimed at animal rescue, and the current project is another step on this path,” the founder of the Foundation and Ecopark, Ukrainian MP Oleksandr Feldman told.
All of the animals, which were rescued from poachers, underwent a meticulous veterinary examination. Some of them needed the treatment necessary for the stabilization of weight and well-balanced diet. The specialists defined that these animals have enough skills and possibilities for independent life, so all of them were returned to their natural habitat.
Reference. The Javan lutung is a species of primates of the Old World monkey (Cercopithecidae) family living in Southeast Asia. They have black or yellow-brown hair with brown legs and sides. The kids are orange. The representatives of this species have a long tail with the length of up to 98cm, while the body length is nearly 55cm. They are active during the daytime, and spend the most of the time on the trees. Their diet is mainly vegetable: they eat leaves, fruits, flowers, buds, and sometimes maggots. They live in groups from five to ten animals. The females look after offspring – their own and of other mothers.
