The Jerusalem Biblical Zoo transferred unique animals in Feldman Ecopark: three females of a huge gray kangaroo and two couples of prairie dogs moved to Kharkiv. The deputy director Feldman Ecopark Valery Ivashchenko reported about it.
“We met new animals at the Kiev airport. They had a good flight to Ukraine. In the capital we replaced kangaroos and prairie dogs in special vehicles in which thermophilic guests could comfortably reach Eсopark. In the mobile enclosure the temperature conditions no less 20 degrees was set in order the cool Ukrainian autumn didn’t frighten our newcomers”, – Valeria Ivashchenko says.
According to veterinary service of the Ecopark, the arrived animals should be quarantined, and then they will lodge to the new open enclosures on which construction our specialists are working now. The prairie dogs and huge gray kangaroos don’t bear cold weather therefore the guests Feldman Ecopark will be able to see the new handsome not earlier than spring.
Let’s remind that Feldman Ecopark and the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo conduct active exchange of animals since 2015. River otters became the first animals transferred to colleagues from Israel. Then the chief veterinarian, the director of a zoological part of the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo doctor Nili Avni-Magen noted that the cooperation with Feldman Ecopark gave good chances of effective reproduction of river otters the growth of population of which is a task of the state importance.
Reference: The prairie dogs – rodents from (family Sciuridae. Dwell in North America. The main diet of animals consists of plants. For living these quick small animals choose the places which are reliably protected from attack of predators: the prairie dogs dig holes which can reach 5 meters in depth.
Huge gray kangaroos are bright representatives of the Australian fauna. They are champions among a kangaroo: the weight of an animal can reach 70 kilograms, growth – 2 meters. The night is the best eating time for them: at this time kangaroos graze, actively eating grass and leaves of bushes. In sprint the kangaroo can carry speed to 88 km/h and jump to 9 meters, but at the same time they quickly get tired.
