Results of work of Feldman Ecopark Centre of Bats Rehabilitation represented at conference in Germany

Kseniia Kravchenko, the research officer of the Feldman Ecopark Centre of Bats Rehabilitation took part in the All-German Conference of Bats Researches (Tagung Deutscher Fledermausforscher), which took place in the town of Vallendar (near Koblenz.)

During the conference, she made the report on the results of the Centre’s activity. “In general, the exhausted bats are brought to our Centre for rehabilitation (individually or in small groups), and mainly it happens in the end of winter. However, there was also a group of 100 common noctules, which were brought to the centre in the beginning of December 2014. These animals underwent rehabilitation during the whole winter, and were released in Feldman Ecopark in spring 2015,” Kseniia Kravchenko told. “Exactly this group was taken as an example to find out which rehabilitation algorithm is the most effective, and how to find a balance between the minimum man-hours requirements and the most effective rehabilitation. The results of this analysis were presented at the Conference of Bats Researches in Germany.”

According to Kseniia Kravchenko, the report aroused a significant interest of German counterparts, because in Europe, the large groups of bats are found rarely. The similar finds are usually singular and during the whole winter, they have only several tens of bats.

It should be reminded that the programme of rescue and rehabilitation of bats is implemented in Feldman Ecopark since 2013. The necessity in the Centre of Bats Rehabilitation appeared due to the fact that bats, which go into hibernation in winter, often get into trouble due to various reasons: they find themselves outdoors, where they are not able to take care of themselves during the cold season. In winter, the Centre rescues from several hundred to several thousand bats. In spring, they are released back to the wildlife.
