Kharkiv citizens joined the project “One Million Bird Houses in Ukraine”

Last Saturday the guests of the Regional Landscape Park did housing for birds and bats. Within the framework of the project “One Million Nesting Boxes in Ukraine” the volunteers of Green School brought thirty artificial nesting places in the Feldman Ecopark. Young guests decorated wooden houses for birds and bats with the drawings and together with parents and under the leadership of zoologists hanged them on trees along the eco-path. The project’s initiators are confident that by means of such family Saturday clean-ups they are gradually approaching the goal to make the biodiversity protection and preservation movement massive in Ukraine.

“The idea of the project was born in Finland. Tommy Livonen, its author, was the speaker of the eco lecture-hall of Green School in Kiev. He told that in his homeland where the population totals 5,5 million people, in a few short months 1 million nesting houses were built! It became a great game for Finns. They created bird’s apartments and registered them on the electronic card, competed the cities and villages who’s more and at who has the best one. They held photo contests, online consultations and master classes of the famous ornithologists and animal lovers, participated in tests like “Learn what bird you look like” …

We listened to him and decided: Why can’t we, the Ukrainians, be as good as them??!And we began to popularize “One Million Bird Houses in Ukraine”— the coordinator of the Green school Valentina Kiseleva told. – Our main task is quite feasible. We plan to make use of creative Finnish experience and we cooperate with the organizations which are already realizing similar projects. Therefore, as the main platform in Kharkiv we chose the Feldman Ecopark about which zoo-protective and eco-educational activity we’ve heard a lot”.

It should be reminded that the Centre of Cheiroptera Rehabilitation exists, the project “Let’s Preserve Birds Together!” is implemented, mass educational challenge-events are held on the basis of the Regional Landscape Park Feldman Ecopark.
