The deputy director Feldman Ecopark Valery Ivashchenko visited the Riga National Zoo (Latvia). The aimes of this visit is experience exchange and the organization of cooperation for preserving different animal species collections in zoo conditions.
The outcome is signing of the treaty on transfer to the Regional Landscape Park of three kiang females to keep these Tibetan representatives of the horse family for breeding purposes. Also the negotiations on transfer of a lynx and three mocos (the Brazilian mountain mumps) within the framework of the programme of free exchange among zoos are continuing. These animals will appear in Feldman Ecopark next year.
“The Latvian specialists told and showed how they tend for animals, I shared our experience. The Riga Zoo is interesting to us because it is located in similar climatic conditions therefore we consider its possibilities both on winter and on summer animal collection. Besides, this zoo has wide experience on animal breeding, including kiangs, – Valeria Ivashchenko told. – Now within the development of our cooperation we are awaiting the specialists from Riga. I’m sure that we also can be useful for them; we’ll share our experience, our communication will be mutually advantageous and will promote preserving of rare animal species”.
Reference. The Riga Zoo (Latvia) was founded in 1908 as the association “Riga Zoological Garden”, works since 1912. The zoo is open all year round; its area constitutes 0,199 sq.km. More than 3 thousand animals of 400 types live in it. In 1993 the Tsiruli filial zoo near Liepaja located in the territory of 137 hectares was founded. Attendance of the Riga Zoo comprises 300 thousand visitors a year.
