The animal was handed over from private hands and soon it will join the relatives already living in the Feldman Ecopark.
“A dog was bought as a pet. However, unfortunately, the animal hasn’t got accustomed in a family and people handed it over to the Feldman Ecopark. This is a young year-old male. The raccoon dog is healthy and soon will join the relatives in the open enclosure, but meanwhile it stays in quarantine. The dog isn’t aggressive though it still should get used to new people and keepers whom the animal keeps off yet” — Valeriia Ivashchenko, the Feldman Ecopark’s deputy director of zootechnics reported.
The raccoon dog’s natural habitat is the Far East, namely Amur River region, the Korean peninsula, east part of China, Southeast Asian Peninsula and also Japan where these animals play a prominent role in traditional culture as Tanuki, the mythological werewolf. In the first half of the XX century raccoon dogs were brought to Europe where have widely spread under natural conditions.
Except the new pet there are seven more raccoon dogs in Feldman Ecopark’s zoological collection.
