A representative of one of the most miniature primates on the planet appeared in the animal collection of the Regional Landscape Park. The buffy-tufted marmoset was brought from Kyiv. The previous owners, who got a monkey as a present, understood that it is problematic and irresponsible to keep this exotic animal at home. They decided to give it to Feldman Ecopark, because consider it is a perfect place for the life of our four-legged friends.
“It is a young, healthy and active male. It has a keen appetite and likes fruits and vagetables. After the veterinary examination and obligatory quarantine, the new one was settled in the enclosure with the other small monkeys – tamarins and common squirrel monkeys. When it gets warmer, the visitors will be able to see it,” Feldman Ecopark’s deputy director of zootechnics Valeriia Ivashchenko told. “It is the single representative of buffy-tufted marmosets in Feldman Ecopark so far, but we will definitely find a couple for it soon.”
Reference: the buffy-tufted marmoset (callithrix aurita) is a typical representative of the smallest primates on the planet, the family of callitrichidae. These monkeys live in evergreen subtropical forests of Southeastern Brazil. They differ with their distinctive look from the other callitrichidae. Because of their white fur over the ears, they were called ‘buffy-tufted.’ It is a very sociable animal. It seems that the marmosets chatter with each other non-stop. It is also peculiar for them to be able to make nearly ultrasonic whistle. The current population of the buffy-tufted marmosets is not numerous, and the species is in the Red List as vulnerable.
It should be reminded that the collection of primates in the Regional Landscape Park Feldman Ecopark is one of the largest in Eastern Europe. It includes more than 200 monkeys of 30 species.
