In the end of September, Kyiv is going to host an international conference devoted to the problems of Holocaust denial.
The relevant agreement was reached during the meeting of Ukrainian MP Oleksandr Feldman with the US Department of State’s Special Envoy for Holocaust Issues Thomas Yazdgerdi and the chairman of the US Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad Lesley Weiss, which took place in Geneva.
The conference is arranged by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance in association with the organizations from the USA, Germany and other countries.
Moreover, during the meeting, the participants discussed the creation of the international coalition of the countries aimed at rehabilitation (arrangement) of the place of massacre of Jews during the Holocaust times and Ukraine’s possible joining of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.
“I think that the creation of this coalition is topical as never before. The arrangement of the massacre sites will make it possible to comprehensively inform the next generations about those terrible crimes, which were committed against Jews. And, of course, those sites must become a reminder about the reasons for these crimes and, first of all, for them to never happen again in the future,” Mr. Feldman stated.
According to the words of the politician, during the meeting with the politicians from the USA, the problems of present-day Ukraine were discussed. In particular, American counterparts paid attention to the fact of hosting Roman Shukhevych remembrance festival in Lviv on June 30-July 2, when the whole world commemorates the thousands of Jews killed commemorate during Lviv’s massacre.
“I have a lot in common with Lviv. I served in the army there, I love this city and visit it often, I carry out exhibitions there. And I ask the mayor of Lviv Andrii Sadovyi to cancel or at least postpone the festival. ShukhevychFest is a humiliation and offence of the memory of innocent residents of Lviv who were the victims of Nazi propaganda, anti-Semitism and xenophobia. I am sure that the residents of Lviv – modern and progressive people – will not fall for provocations of unscrupulous figures who want to sow the seeds of split and hate in our society,” Mr. Feldman said.
It should be noted that Ukrainian MP Oleksandr Feldman is currently on business trip in Geneva on the invitation of the chairman of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.
