The family of Alaskan tundra wolves of Feldman Ecopark increases: 5 year old Klava and Malysh gave birth to two wolf cubs nearly a month ago (on May 9). The kids feel themselves fine, soon they will undergo vaccination and all of the necessary veterinary procedures.
“This year, all of three species of wolves (gray, northwestern and Alaskan tundra wolves) living in Feldman Ecopark produced offspring. As for the Alaskan tundra wolves, they give birth to cubs for the third year running, and every year it happens during May holidays,” Feldman Ecopark’s deputy director of zootechnics Valeriia Ivashchenko tells. “The newborns are still eating mother’s milk, but they’ve already tasted meat and curd. When they turn 2.5, they will eat only meat, and at the age of 3 months they will start living independently.”
It is planned to transfer these Alaskan tundra wolf cubs born in Feldman Ecopark to the other zoos within the exchange programme.
It should be reminded that this year, the offspring was produced by the other species of wolves living in Feldman Ecopark: a couple of northwestern wolves Aza and Baron gave birth to two cubs on April 17, and a couple of gray wolves Dasha and Judge gave birth to seven cubs on April 29.
Reference. The Alaskan tundra wolf is a subspecies of wolf inhabiting the whole territory of the Arctic and tundra except ice floes and big territories covered with ice. It lives on large spaces of polar regions plunged in darkness during 5 months. In order to survive, the wolf adapted itself to eat any food it finds. It may live for many years under the temperature below zero, to see no sunlight during months and to stay without food during weeks. The animal’s body length (without tail) is 130-150cm. The height at the shoulder is 80-93cm. The weight is up to 85kg. The females are smaller.
