The inhabitants of a high-rise block of one of the bedroom suburbs of Kharkiv witnessed a sudden finding. During the renovation of a balcony, they found about one thousand common noctules and brought them to the specialists of the Feldman Ecopark’s Centre of Cheiroptera Rehabilitation.
“Last week the Feldman Ecopark Centre of Cheiroptera Rehabilitation rescued unprecedented quantity of animals. These are 979 common noctules which chose the place for wintering in balcony cracks of one of the bedroom suburbs’ high-rise block. During the renovation of a balcony their shelter has been destroyed, and bats woke up under the open sky. The specialists of our Centre have rapidly rescued animals and took them on further rehabilitation and wintering. That’s a record throughout the Centre’s existence” — the Centre’s deputy head, Ph.D. Olena Prylutska emphasized.
It has turned out that a half of common noctules rescued in Kharkiv needs bringing up for the next two-three weeks, Olena Prylutska told. After that they will be placed on wintering, and in the spring the rescued bats will be released to the nature.
“We are trying our best to make the sheltered animals lived up to spring. But we really need help in daily feeding of bats. You help in any form will be welcome. Thus, already over 2 000 bats winter in the Feldman Ecopark Centre of Cheiroptera Rehabilitation this year. Among them 637 bats from Karlivka (Poltava oblast) being found during the renovation of school and 57 Kuhl’s pipistrelles brought from Barvenki (Kharkiv oblast) that have also lost the place of their habitual wintering during window unit installation in the school №2 of the village Ivanivka.
It should be reminded that the Centre of Cheiroptera Rehabilitation of Feldman Ecopark is the first similar institution in Ukraine. It was established in 2013. In addition to the rescue of bats, the Centre carries out an active scientific and educational activity.
