Buffon’s macaws, vulturine parrot and sarus cranes – new feathery pets, whose historical homeland is distant tropical countries, appeared in the Regional Landscape Park. According to the Feldman Ecopark’s deputy director of zootechnics Valeriia Ivashchenko, the birds arrived from a private zoo, underwent quarantine and all of the necessary veterinary procedures. Now they adapt to expositional enclosures and the visitors can admire them.
“An adult male of vulturine parrot and the young couple of Buffon’s macaws stay in the parrot warren together with their relatives. In total we have more than 300 individuals of 25 species of parrots, but beauties like this we have never had before. The vultarine parrot is a very rare species, I doubt whether in Ukraine exist zoos in which expositions this parrot is presented — Valeriia Ivashchenko told. – The sarus cranes appeared in our zoological collection for the first time, it is the largest of the crane representatives existing in the nature. The arrived couple occupies separate enclosure so far, and in the spring we might bring them outdoors to their relatives – gray, crowned, white-naped, red-crowned cranes. Today, there are 7 species of these beautiful birds in the Ecopark including new settlers”.
The Buffon’s macaw inhabits wet tropical valleys of Central America. The bird was named so because of khaki plumage. The vulturine parrot is the Indonesian islander endemic, a big fan of fig, papaya and avocado was named so because of a bent beak and big wings. These birds became rare species because of the bright feathers serving as ritual decoration of Papuans. The sarus crane is the aboriginal South and Southeast Asia, a giant among relatives. The growth is, on average, 176 cm, the weight is 6,35 kg, and the wingspan is 240 cm.
It should be reminded that recently the bird family of the Feldman Ecopark added couple of Himalayan monal pheasant and a sulphur-crested cockatoo. In general, the zoological collection of the Feldman Ecopark totals more than 2000 animals of 300 species, the birds form roughly one half of it.
