The beginning of November was interesting and rich in events for the members of the Children’s Ecology and Nature Study Academy. They became the prizewinners at the All-Ukrainian Forum of Schoolchildren and Students “The Touch of the Nature,” and went on the scientific expedition aimed at Kharkiv’s migratory birds recording.
“During the annual gathering of young ecologists from across Ukraine arranged by the National Ecological and Naturalistic Center for Students our Academy was represented by Kseniia Ukolova, Kateryna Kanevska, Yelizaveta Pokhodenko and Kateryna Myronenko. The girls have prepared two reports written in co-authorship based on the results of the observations of the animals from the animal collection of Feldman Ecopark and on the practical lessons in the Theatre of Children and Animals,” their tutor and the head of the Theatre of Children and Animals under the Children’s Academy of Feldman Ecopark Olena Harazhyna told. “Their scientific researches – “Some peculiarities in behavior of ring-tailed lemurs” and “How to help zoo animals to overcome boredom” – were appreciated by the judges at their true value and both took the second place.”
It is worth noting that the members of the Children’s Ecology and Nature Study Academy of Feldman Ecopark take part and win in various scientific conferences and competitions on a regular basis. The secret of their success is in the unique opportunities provided by the Regional Landscape Park for the study of nature, as well as in the pedagogic talent and professionalism of educators working here with children. The lesson plans prepared for different ages include not only the outdoor biology lessons, animal observations and constant contact with animals, but also the comprehensive field studies of flora and fauna in the natural habitat. Thus, last Saturday, the group of young biologists of the Children’s Academy of Feldman Ecopark went of scientific expedition on Lyman Lake (Zmiiv region, Kharkiv oblast). They learnt bird migration there: using the special optical instruments, they watched the birds flying south and kept records about those, who are staying for winter in our region.
“The data obtained as the result of this ornithological expedition are used by our young naturalists for the preparation of their scientific works for the spring conference,” the head of the biology circle under the Children’s Academy of Feldman Ecopark Anna Pozdniakova noted.
It should be reminded that the Children’s Ecology and Nature Study Academy of Feldman Ecopark was founded in 2012. It is one of Ukraine’s largest non-governmental out-of-school educational institutions. More than 1,000 children aged 3-18 attend it.
