Six new feathered pets appeared in the Regional Landscape Park: a couple of southern screamers, three black-necked swans and a coscoroba swan. Unlike the swans, the congeners of which are already represented in the animal collection of Feldman Ecopark, southern screamers have settled here for the first time.
“The birds arrived from a private zoo together with Albert, the penguin. They are all healthy and actively eat grain and vitamin mixtures. The new settlers have already undergone a veterinary examination and other necessary procedures, and are currently getting used to the neighbours and their new home. For now, they are living in an open enclosure near flamingos and turtles, but when it turns colder, they will move to winter premises,” Feldman Ecopark’s deputy director of zootechnics Valeriia Ivashchenko told. “The visitors of Feldman Ecopark are already able to admire these beautiful creatures, whose native land is in the other hemisphere – in South America. By the way, the southern screamers are a great rarity for Ukrainian zoos. We have a couple – male and female, so we hope for the increase of population in spring.”
It is worth noting that the southern screamer, or crested screamer is a large bird of swan size. It has long legs and beak resembling the hen’s one. It is mainly found in southern Brazil and Argentina, preferring to live on wet meadows, forest lakes and swamps. The black-necked swans and the coscoroba swans have almost the same native land. The first ones are interesting with their the black-and-white colouration of plumage – black head and neck and white body. The coscoroba swan, in the strict sense, is not a swan: although it looks like these birds, it is a single species of its genus.
It should be reminded that a Humboldt penguin, or Peruvian penguin, has recently appeared in Feldman Ecopark. In total, the animal collection of the Regional Landscape Park includes more than 1,000 birds of 100 species.
