Centre of Cheiroptera Rehabilitation introduced Kharkiv schoolchildren to bats

The workers of the Centre of Cheiroptera Rehabilitation of Feldman Ecopark Olena Prylutska and Anton Vlashchenko carried out an outdoor workshop about bats for the students of the special boarding school “Obdarovanist” on the Biological Research Station under V. Karazin Kharkiv National University, where the students undergo biology practical training.

The children were told about the directions of the Centre’s activity and watched the documentary about bats. The special presentation was devoted to the modern methods of field researches of animals (including the bats), namely the use of trail cameras, ultrasonic detectors, radio- and satellite tracking system, temperature measurement loggers, etc..

In the evening, the excursion to the floodplain of the Siverskyi Donets River was carried out, where children saw mist nets placed to capture bats. The main focus of the workshop was made on remote, acoustic methods of bat research. In the floodplain of the Siverskyi Donets River they were listened and recorded with the help of ultrasonic detectors. The next day, the children attended a master class in the analysis of ultrasonic signals with the help of the special software.

It is not the first cooperation of the school “Obdarovanist” and Feldman Ecopark’s Centre of Cheiroptera Rehabilitation. And following the results of the previous lessons and this workshop, many students became interested in the research work in the Centre and Feldman Ecopark.
