Hamadryas baboon born in Feldman Ecopark

The big family of primates of the Feldman Ecopark has a new baby. A hamadryas baboon kid was born. It is the first birth of a baby of these quite big monkeys in the Regional Landscape Park.

“The newborn feels well. Unfortunately, its mother appeared to be not prepared to take care of the baby, that is why our workers took upon themselves the responsibility for it. The kid is under constant surveillance of the Ecopark’s veterinarians. It is fed with infant formulas. The hamadryas baboons are very vivid and sociable monkeys, and the newborn is not an exception. It has lively, active and playful character,” the Feldman Ecopark deputy director of zootechnic issues Valeriia Ivashchenko tells.

The kid will live in the Ecopark until it gets stronger. Later, it will be possible to give it to some other zoo or to exchange it.

It should be noted that the Feldman Ecopark has the biggest collection of primates in Ukraine. There are over 200 animals (including 12 hamadryas baboons) of 30 species here. In general, it is a home for over 2,000 animals.

The hamadryas baboon is a monkey with a body measurement of up to 1 metre. The fur of the hamadryas baboon is commonly grey. Males have long ‘hair’ on their head, shoulders and breast creating some kind of a mane. The ischial callosity is red. They eat roots and small animals (snails, worms and insects). The natural habitat of the hamadryas baboons is the open territories of Africa (Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia, southern Nubia) and Asia (the Arabian Peninsula, including Yemen).
