The collection of primates of the Feldman Ecopark grows. Very rare and very interesting monkeys from Brazil – the golden lion tamarins (the golden marmosets) appeared there. Three monkeys of this species arrived in the Regional Landscape Park within the programme of free exchange among zoos.
“The golden marmosets will certainly win the hearts of the Ecopark’s visitors. These small monkeys resemble lions because of their appearance (thanks to the golden pelage and long hairs around the head) and because of their habits. The tamarins are very active. It is interesting to watch their games,” the Feldman Ecopark deputy director of zootechnic issues Valeriia Ivashchenko tells.
According to her words, the new ones feel fine after their journey, and currently get used to the new place. They were settled in the closed indoor enclosure. Their food is rather diverse: they eat cereals, meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, and special vitamin supplements.
It should be noted that the Feldman Ecopark has the biggest collection of primates in Ukraine. There are over 200 animals of 30 species in it. In general, it is a home for over 2,000 animals.
The golden lion tamarin, or the golden marmoset is a monkey of the family Callitrichidae. It is the biggest representative of the family weighing up to 900 g, and having the height of 20-25 cm. There are only about 1,500 animals of this species in the nature, including nearly a third of them in the zoos. The natural habitat of tamarins reduces due to deforestation, mineral production and urbanization of the Atlantic coast of Brazil.
