Couple of crowned pigeons lodged in Feldman Ecopark. These are the biggest pigeons on the planet which are much larger than other congeners. In the nature they live only in New Guinea and on nearby islands. It is a rare species brought in the International Red List. There were no crowned pigeons not only in the Ecopark, but also in any of Ukrainian zoos before.<\/p>\n

One more interesting feature \u2013 these pigeons create married couples for the rest of life, that isn’t too widespread among birds, – the deputy director Feldman Ecopark Valery Ivashchenko notes. \u2013 They surely will become one of favorites of the Regional Landscape Park’s visitors”.<\/p>\n
Thermophilic newcomers will winter in the heated room where all conditions for adaptation, care, veterinary control and the balanced feeding (crowned pigeons eat fruit, vegetables and grain) are provided to them. It will be possible to see them in the open enclosure this spring.<\/p>\n
A body length of crowned pigeons is up to 80 cm, weight – to 2,5 kg. In the nature they live in the forests of New Guinea where they seek food on the earth and build their nests highly on trees. Life expectancy of crowned pigeons can exceed 20 years. Now in the nature there are presumably no more than 2 500 – 10 000 adult individuals, population is quickly reduced as a result of unlimited hunting (for the sake of meat, feathers and black market trade), and also because of loss of the habitat.<\/p>\n
