CHERNOZEM<\/a> portal, within the framework of the series of materials about the most famous Ukrainian patrons of the past and the present, published an interview with Oleksandr Feldman, who told about the start of his passion for collecting works of art, about patrons inspiring him, and why business people must increase and preserve cultural riches. \u201cThose who want to know more about Oleksandr Feldman\u2019s collection, can attend an exhibition \u2018The warrior\u2019s way \u2013 one for two\u2019 which is open in Bogdan and Varvara Khanenko Museum of Art. The event is devoted to Cossack and Samurai weapons from the Feldman Family Museum collection, and will take place till April 30,\u201d the authors remind.<\/p>\n

Why the exhibition \u201cThe warrior\u2019s way \u2013 one for two\u201d (taking place in the Bogdan and Varvara Khanenko Museum of Art) is special and unique?<\/strong><\/p>\n

As far as I know, a similar exhibition is held in Ukraine for the first time. The idea to show the objects of Cossack and samurai weapons together, in one exhibition hall, drew a wide response. Although, even we thought in the beginning that it was too bold. What is the purpose of this exhibition? First, we wanted to demonstrate the imperishable value of such notions as courage, honour, patriotism, devotion, and self-sacrifice in various cultures of the world. The Cossacks and the Samurais are like no others embody these values. Second, we wanted to show the special place of Ukrainian Cossacks in the world history and the topicality of their heroic traditions for the present times. The comparison with another military tradition, recognized by the whole world, helps people to understand better the historical mission of Ukrainian Cossacks. These people, like the Samurais, represented the special military estate with own specific soldierly philosophy, morals, etiquette, symbols, and life style. Both created their original, very developed military cultures, which, despite all the obvious differences, appear to have some intriguing parallels. And there is nothing surprising in this, as the whole life of both the Cossacks and the Samurais was connected with war; and this means they had to face similar problems. Professional approach and rich military experience helped them to choose the most efficient solutions, which, in turn, provide us with the diverse material for comparison. It is also interesting because despite the fact that the Cossacks and the Samurais lived in the same time, they have never met due to geographic reasons.<\/p>\n

Why did you choose weapons for this exhibition?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is impossible to learn history and culture of the Cossacks and the Samurais without paying attention to their weapons. For them, as professional warriors, it had exclusive, vital importance. It is no coincidence that in medieval Japan it was a sword that served as a sign of belonging to a privileged military estate, it was considered as a \u201cSamurai\u2019s soul,\u201d while sabre in Ukraine was a symbol of the independent Cossack estate. Both respected and loved their arms, which is confirmed by the rich Ukrainian folklore.<\/p>\n

During the work of the exposition, it is planned to give lectures and make open<\/strong> excursions. This means that you perform the educational function as well. Why did you decide to choose this approach?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Starting from 2001, we have held over 40 different exhibitions in Kharkiv, Kyiv, Lviv and Zaporizhzhia. All of them pursued educational aims. The current exhibition is not an exception. Weapons are the source of various valuable information about people, who created and used them. However, not every visitor of the exhibition is ready to \u201cread\u201d this information without outside expert assistance. It is not enough just to place the exhibits in the exhibition hall, it is necessary to tell about them, use them as a clear illustration to knowledge and ideas, which we want to bring to people.<\/p>\n

Are you planning to develop the \u201cCossack and Samurai\u201d direction by opening new exhibitions?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Opening of the exposition in the Bogdan and Varvara Khanenko Museum of Art is the first step within the frameworks of our new historical and educative project. We are planning to show this exhibition in other large cities of Ukraine. The next ones are Chernihiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv.<\/p>\n

Please, tell us more about the Feldman Family Museum.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a private museum institution, the Feldman Family Museum was founded in 2004. However, the collections in it started to be created almost two decades ago. The museum was established in order to bring our work to the new, qualitative level, and to make it more well-organized and systematic. The matter is in all directions, including formation of the collections, restoration, the exhibit storage, researches, publication of scientific results, holding of exhibitions, development of relationships with the other museums and experts. The mission of our institution is to make the collections the part of national wealth, to turn them into an efficient tool of cultural and educative work. For this purpose, the must be open and accessible for wide audience and for the interested specialists. Actually, they were created to bring positive results, not to collect dust in a storage room. What is the benefit of a collection \u2013 even the biggest and the most valuable \u2013 for the society, if no one sees them?<\/p>\n

How the passion for art appeared, as well as the passion for collecting, which resulted in creation of museum?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Perhaps, there is the thirst for collecting in every person since childhood. Children bring home every trifle being valuable only for them. Having grown up and got wiser, they become much more practical and begin surrounding themselves with useful objects. For some people, the passion of their childhood transforms into something more serious, others turn it to a lifetime project. In the beginning, I was attracted just by beautiful works of art. However, eventually, the priorities became clear for me. And the main thing is that I understood that collecting brings joy not only to me, but also to other people, who I show my acquisitions to. So, the idea of holding of exhibitions was born. Then, it developed into the idea of creation of museum for people to be able to watch my collections always.<\/p>\n

The museum includes masterpieces of Occidental and Oriental cultures. You collected them during near 20 years. What are these collections exactly?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The concept of the museum is really in the equal representation of Occidental and Oriental cultures. At the moment, there are near 4,000 works of art and relics in the museum. There are several big collections or even sections, which, in turn, are divided into smaller subsections. Some of them are widely known thanks to exhibitions and catalogues. Occidental Art section consists of the works by the artists of the School of Paris and bronze animal sculptures; Oriental Art section includes Indian jewellery and Japanese miniature sculptures called okimono<\/em>. Weapons Art section unites the arms used by different peoples of the East and the West. Moreover, there are also Conchology and Paleontology sections, which have their individual significance. The first one consists of over 4,000 mollusc shells; the second one consists of various fossilis.<\/p>\n

Why did you decide to collect ancient weapons?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Almost in every culture of the world, weapons were not just murder tools. They are the integral part of material and spiritual culture. It developed in close relation to history, art, technics and technology, and the whole lifestyle of one or another people; it absorbed its traditions, customs, and beliefs. The significance and the prestigiousness of weapons was so high that it became some kind of an incentive for behaviour, an indicator of social status, a symbol of power, and a sacred object. I am interested in the ancient weapons only as in a cultural and historical phenomenon. That is why I prefer weapons with rich decoration, as well as the objects belonging to the famous historical figures. Chronological framework of the collection is great \u2013 from the Bronze Age to the 20th<\/sup> century, however, the main part of the items dates from the 17th<\/sup>-19th<\/sup> centuries. It is possible to see here the items from almost all European countries. But the experts consider that the most interesting and valuable are the selections of Oriental weaponry. The weaponry of Turkey, Iran, India, Indonesia, and Japan are represented best of all. Another one, relatively new direction is a cold weapon of Ukrainian Cossacks. This subsection has a special place in the collection, as, first of all, the Cossacks played exclusively important role in the history of our country, and second, their complex of weapons had mixed origin, representing both European and Oriental types of weaponry.<\/p>\n

Will there be the exhibitions of the other directions of the collection in the future?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We have planned several diverse exhibitions for this year. For example, Kharkiv will host the Legends of the Ocean<\/em> exhibition representing rare and unique mollusc shells. This is the fourth similar exhibition. We are going to demonstrate a lot of new interesting exhibits. In addition, we are planning to open the okimono <\/em>exhibition in the Bogdan and Varvara Khanenko Museum of Art in the nearest future. We arranged the similar exposition here in 2010, but now, this means the long-term joint project.<\/p>\n

You also plan to create an art complex with laboratories, schools and exhibition halls. How close are you to this goal?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The matter is in the creation of a big cultural and educational centre that could be the pride not only for Kharkiv, but also for the whole Ukraine. Museum will occupy the central place in it; however, a lot of other projects will be implemented there in order to attract as many interested people as possible. We studied carefully the experience of the activity of similar centres abroad, but we want to create something special, something more comfortable and functional. We are currently finishing designing this art complex, and we already have rather clear view of its future social effect.<\/p>\n

How much the support of art is important for you, and what is the role of patronage in your life?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our foundation supports state museums, scientific archaeological expeditions, young artists and scientists during many years. This work will continue. I am convinced that collecting and patronage are two sides of the same coin. Collecting and preserving the works of art and the relics, collectors do good to the society. But the positive effect will increase if they show their collections on the exhibitions, cooperate with scientist and experts, publish books and catalogues, donate collection items to state museums, and finally, open their own museums. It\u2019s not a secret that the overwhelming majority of European and American museums appeared from the private collections.<\/p>\n

The range of auctions was initiated based on the Feldman Family Museum collection. Tell more about this.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The series of charitable auctions The Art of Mercy<\/em> are directed at the assistance to the rising generation. We have a goal to attract the attention of the public to the problem of children\u2019s health in Ukraine, to initiate and stimulate patrons\u2019 activity to solve it. The first similar auction was held in 2011. 55 pictures were exhibited on it. They included the colored lithographs and etchings by Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Henri Matisse, and the paintings by David Burliuk, Vasyl Khmeluk, Mykola Hlushchenko and the other famous artists. As the result, we raised a sum of near UAH 2 million. These means were transferred to the purchase of the equipment produced by Nicolet Endeavor CR, Anspach Effort Inc. and Synthes Inc. for the Kharkiv Municipal Centre of Children\u2019s Neurosurgery. There was no similar equipment in Ukraine at that time. Considering the great results of the first project and the intense interest of patrons, the Foundation made the decision to continue the program. The second auction was held in 2013 on the territory of the Mystetskyi Arsenal<\/em> art centre. The charitable evening was devoted to fund-raising for the construction of the rehabilitation centre for children and teenagers with mental disorders in the Feldman Ecopark. 35 works by the talented Ukrainian masters were exhibited at the charitable event. Traditionally, all lots were the part of the Feldman Family Museum collection. The fourth project The Art of Mercy<\/em> will be directed at the support of young talented Ukrainian authors. Holding the series of exhibitions of their works in Ukraine and abroad, the Foundation will popularize the creative works of our nationals. Later, the works by the participants of the project will be exhibited as lots at the international auctions. The raised money will be spent on the assistance to children with special needs.<\/p>\n

Which foreign patrons inspire you? And what is the level of patronage in Ukraine?<\/strong><\/p>\n

As for the modern foreign collectors and philanthropists, the special attention should be paid to Nasser David Khalili, the world-famous British-Iranian scientist, PhD, who is considered to have the largest private collection. He is interested in Japanese and Islamic arts, which are in my range of interests as well. In addition, Khalili is the UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, he contributes a lot in the development of cross-cultural dialogue and tolerance, which is very urgent for Europe. However, the examples are around us. There were a lot of collectors and philanthropists in pre-revolutionary Ukraine, like Bogdan Khanenko, Vasyl Tarnovslyi and Mykola Kharytonenko. They have established rich traditions of charity, which begin to revive in our country only now. And despite the slow development of this process, there are promising prospects.<\/p>\n

Do you think it is important for business people to support the popularization of art? How difficult and expensive it is?<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is no doubt that it is both difficult and expensive. Nevertheless, in every country, especially in the difficult historical periods, business people must be active in increasing and preserving cultural riches, as well as developing and preserving the intellectual potential of the nation. Let\u2019s put aside the rhetorical question why our state is not able to provide the preservation of the cultural heritage, let alone its increase. I think that if a state has no time and resources for this, it must at least demonstrate readiness to accept assistance of concerned citizens. Our society will only benefit if collectors bring more and more world-wide works of art to the country, return cultural values, which were taken out of our country, open private museums and help the state ones, and support country\u2019s science and art. Understanding of own usefulness and relevance is a powerful stimulus for any patron and collector.<\/p>\n
